November Superintendent Message

There’s so much more to this hobby than just “building trains in your basement!” I’ve been giving rides to kids (and sometimes their parents) on Halloween on my backyard railroad for about twenty years now! I’ve missed a few years because of bad weather and last year we were on a family trip. It’s a lot of work to get things ready but this year my son and his friends helped out. It has become multi-generational – kids who are now grown are bringing their own kids to enjoy the tradition of riding the Haunted Halloween Train like they did when they were young. This year a dad came without his kids (they are too old to trick or treat with dad) before the rush to fulfill a bucket list item. In all the years he had never ridden it, just watched as his kids had fun. I’m glad I was able to make one of his dreams come true! It’s rewarding to give back to the community and fun to share this hobby with others.

If you want to get more involved with the Division activities there are a few positions on the board that you can run for. Let Rick know. You can also join one of our many committees. We are also still looking for a new meeting place. If you have ideas let Bob Connolly or Lowell know.

November is National Model Railroad Month so think about ways you can share your love of model railroading with others. There are lots of activities in the coming months you can invite others to. As we share new (and old) ideas about how to enjoy this hobby, think about how you can include others and we can enjoy the journey together!
